The close of 2014 welcomed the grand opening of the latest iteration of Boeddeker Park, nestled in the heart of the Tenderloin, a 20 block triangle of downtown San Francisco. Originally configured in 1985, this one-acre urban oasis serves as a haven for the district’s more than 20,000 residents, specifically children, and seniors. The park now boasts an open layout with a state-of-the-art playground, recreation courts, and a 4,000 square foot clubhouse clad in MetalTech-Global zinc Flatlock panels.

San Francisco’s Trust for Public Land in conjunction with the Recreation and Parks Departments teamed with WRNS Studio to reimagine the park and clubhouse to address the needs of the community.

“The clubhouse was conceived as an inviting living room for the neighborhood,” says WRNS Studio. “Its geometries are derived from integration with the park and a respectful contrast to the surrounding neighborhood fabric.”

Preweathered zinc was specified to clad the clubhouse exterior façade and portions of the roof. MetalTech-Global was chosen to fabricate the zinc Flatlock Tile system. In total, 4,500 square feet of Flatlock Tiles were required to sheathe the L-shaped clubhouse.

“In addition to their durability and easy maintenance, the [zinc] panels were chosen to enhance the building’s aesthetic and the delightful contrast within its urban setting,” notes WRNS Studio on the selection of zinc for the building exterior.

The design by WRNS called for the Flatlock panels to transition in an uninterrupted manner from the façade to the roof. A majority of the cladding was able to be prefabricated by MetalTech-Global. However, the panels for the unique façade to roof transition were prepped at the MetalTech-Global facility and the field cut and formed on-site to fit by project installer Pioneer Contractors, LLC.

“Open communication with the installer on panel orientation and panel count was critical to ensure the proper fabrication of the system, “says MetalTech-Global Project Manager Josh Spence. “Pioneer Contracting did a great job to keep the overall design while enhancing the ease of installation. We are very pleased with the results.”
