Picture

MetalTech-Global continues to add to their independent, outside sales team with the addition of Jim Kane, owner of Affinity Concepts, LLC, as a sales representative. Based out of Clearwater, Florida, Kane will be representing the state of Florida for existing and potential clients in the area.

Established in July 2009, Affinity Concepts, a manufacturer representative for architectural products, was developed as a new venture, inspired by Kane’s 15-year business history. Drawing from his comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing processes and material applications of the building industry, becoming a manufacturers’ representative was a natural progression for Kane.

“I am very excited to have Jim on board. His experience with rainscreen façade systems will compliment MetalTech-Global’s system ingenuity. In order to provide façade solutions, you need someone, like Jim, that understands building techniques and methods,” says Brandon Henry, Sales Manager of MetalTech-Global. “Jim will be a strong asset for us in Florida to help guide architects and designers in the initial design phase.”

Affinity Concepts promotes products in existing markets to architects, designers, fabricators, and installers providing product knowledge, comprehensive support, and service. Focusing on two primary segments—ornamental metals and building façade cladding systems, Affinity Concepts has been recognized as a resource for cladding materials and rainscreen cladding applications.

“I look forward to working with the design community to convey the unique capabilities of MetalTech-Global,” says Kane. “They are truly a solution based supplier in the solid metal panel discipline. MetalTech-Global’s approach to customer service carries full staff support and even offers BIM content for all of their products. There are some really exciting opportunities for designers to work with these sustainable products and a first class product supplier like MetalTech-Global.”

With the addition of Kane, MetalTech-Global has a total of 10 independent, outside sales representatives covering vast areas of the United States as well as Mexico. This team helps streamline the design process and provides the best solutions to even the most complex designs. MetalTech-Global Zinc Panels Make CREC Academy Transformation Take Flight

An antiquated business complex in Windsor, Connecticut has been reimagined into the new CREC Academy of Aerospace and Engineering, a state-of-the-art Magnet School, with the help of MetalTech-Global’s zinc panels. Opened in September 2015, this new facility houses 735 students Grades 6-12 in an impressive 150,197 square feet. The old structure was stripped to its steel frame and retrofitted to be as visionary as the school itself.

Friar Associates of Farmington, Connecticut drew from Connecticut’s history steeped in aeronautics and aviation for the school’s thematic design. The exterior features a material palette inspired by the Hubble Telescope’s deep space photo of the Lagoon Nebula as well as a contemporary “airfoil” form to emphasize the middle school façade. Zinc was chosen to clad the façade of this unique structure.

“The look of zinc best represented the look of an airplane wing while being aesthetically pleasing at the same time,” says Friar Associates Senior Project Manager Bryce Sens. “Additionally, the gray color of the zinc fit perfectly into the exterior color scheme of the building which consists of both black and white phenolic rain screen panels on opposing sides of the structure.”
MetalTech-Global was selected to fabricate the 22 GA (.8mm) pre-weathered zinc cladding. The original design called for a zinc Standing Seam system to be applied to the wing. “The curvature and conical shape of the structure made it difficult to continue the straight line orientation of the Standing Seam Panels on the upper roof area,” cites MetalTech-Global Senior Project Manager Michael Love.

To best accommodate the architecture, Friar Associates made the decision to install MetalTech-Global Flatlock Panels as well. In total, 5,200 square feet of Double Lock Standing Seam and 3,900 square of Flatlocks were used. The Flatlock Panels were installed diagonally to better conform to the curvature of the lower roof.
“The fact that tiles actually ‘corkscrew’ around the wing is a natural reaction of the material to the complex geometry of the wing,” says Sens.

“Friar Associates is extremely proud of the final outcome of this project. We transformed what used to be an ordinary office building into what we would consider a habitable work of art that teaches and informs the occupants of the building (MS and HS students) aeronautic concepts via Architecture and Engineering.”
The installing contractor on this project was Silktown Roofing of Manchester, Connecticut.

MetalTech-Global Introduces Strata Panels…A New Dimension in Design

Latest News

MetalTech-Global, a leading distributor, and manufacturer of architectural metal cladding systems are introducing Strata, a new surface texture developed as an attractive and economical option to enhance their line of architectural metal cladding products. Strata consist of breaks, or shallow striations, in the flat surface of the metal running longitudinally. Strata add a layer of visual dimension to a seemingly flat panel by playing with light and shadow. Dependent upon the direction of light, mixing panel orientation and ultimately striation direction can give the façade dynamic, aesthetic appeal. The addition of this surface texture also provides rigidity for the panel allowing for thinner gauges to be used in conjunction with larger panel sizes, thus resulting in cost savings for the customer. Extra rigidity also eliminates the potential for oil canning, an aesthetic issue in thin gauge sheet metal applications.

Strata is suited to be applied to MetalTech-Global Standing Seam, Reveal, and Flatlock Panel Systems. Strata can be used in façade and roofing applications, soffit, ceiling tiles, and interior/exterior

MetalTech-Global Screen Wall Accents New Long Island City Residential

Latest News

Far from the soaring glass towers of the waterfront, the heart of Long Island City is experiencing a surge in residential development and on track to double in size. One such development, 46-09 11th Street Apartments, is drawing the area’s population farther inland. Standing 6 stories, this 65,000 sq. ft. the development boasts 59 rental units primed for habitation by young professionals and artists flocking to this trendy area.

Designed by New York City’s GF55 Partners, 46-09 11th St. sports a brick frontage designed as a contemporary response to the many small scaled LIC manufacturing brick buildings. The 200 ft. block long façade is bisected by a perforated aluminum screen wall, engineered and fabricated by MetalTech-Global of Peachtree City, GA.

“The metal panels were used as a way to help break up the block-long façade and to help break down the scale of the façade,” says Leonard Fusco of GF55 Partners. “It was a perfect juxtaposition of materials. Metal/brick: light vs. heavy.”

The addition of the metal panel screen wall helps create an identity for the building due to the unique material character and serves as a visual element to identify the entranceway. The perforated panels are back-lit with LED lights allowing it to still be a prominent feature even at night.

MetalTech-Global Zinc Flatlock Panels Complement San Francisco Park Renovation

The close of 2014 welcomed the grand opening of the latest iteration of Boeddeker Park, nestled in the heart of the Tenderloin, a 20 block triangle of downtown San Francisco. Originally configured in 1985, this one-acre urban oasis serves as a haven for the district’s more than 20,000 residents, specifically children, and seniors. The park now boasts an open layout with a state-of-the-art playground, recreation courts, and a 4,000 square foot clubhouse clad in MetalTech-Global zinc Flatlock panels.

San Francisco’s Trust for Public Land in conjunction with the Recreation and Parks Departments teamed with WRNS Studio to reimagine the park and clubhouse to address the needs of the community.

“The clubhouse was conceived as an inviting living room for the neighborhood,” says WRNS Studio. “Its geometries are derived from integration with the park and a respectful contrast to the surrounding neighborhood fabric.”

Preweathered zinc was specified to clad the clubhouse exterior façade and portions of the roof. MetalTech-Global was chosen to fabricate the zinc Flatlock Tile system. In total, 4,500 square feet of Flatlock Tiles were required to sheathe the L-shaped clubhouse.

“In addition to their durability and easy maintenance, the [zinc] panels were chosen to enhance the building’s aesthetic and the delightful contrast within its urban setting,” notes WRNS Studio on the selection of zinc for the building exterior.

The design by WRNS called for the Flatlock panels to transition in an uninterrupted manner from the façade to the roof. A majority of the cladding was able to be prefabricated by MetalTech-Global. However, the panels for the unique façade to roof transition were prepped at the MetalTech-Global facility and the field cut and formed on-site to fit by project installer Pioneer Contractors, LLC.

“Open communication with the installer on panel orientation and panel count was critical to ensure the proper fabrication of the system, “says MetalTech-Global Project Manager Josh Spence. “Pioneer Contracting did a great job to keep the overall design while enhancing the ease of installation. We are very pleased with the results.”

Owensboro-Daviess Convention Center, a multi-purpose facility, brings Western Kentucky a new and premier meeting space in Owensboro, Daviess County. Completed in early 2014, the Convention Center project utilized an exterior anodized aluminum panel rainscreen system engineered and fabricated by MetalTech-Global with Class I anodized aluminum finish from Lorin Industries.

Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, the new convention center rises three stories and spans 177,000 sq. ft. This spacious facility meets all the typical functionality requirements of contemporary convention centers notably 40,000 sf of exhibition space, nearly 30,000 sf of meeting space and extensive public lobbies, as well as service and support facilities. Most importantly it will also serve as a significant economic development tool and an architectural centerpiece of the downtown master redevelopment plan.

“Lorin Industries is proud to have played a role in the project collaboration involving the design of the Owensboro, Kentucky Convention Center,” says Steven Soderberg, Corporate Marketing and Sales Manager of Lorin Industries. “This project was conceived by the design team and architects at Trahan Architects and through the collaboration of Trahan Architects, Lorin Industries, MetalTech-Global and F.L Crane, the results were absolutely stunning.”

Early 1800s tobacco barns found throughout the Kentucky region inspired Trahan’s design on the building’s exterior. To achieve this look, Trahan juxtaposed MetalTech-Global’s reveal panel system with Lorin Industries BlackMatt ColorIn® Long Line Brushed finish on the building’s exterior with ClearMatt® Long Line Brushed finish on the soffits and inward facing exterior walls. This combination created the dramatic effect they wanted to accomplish.

MetalTech-Global Names Spanish Zinc Producer, elZinc, as New Partner

Latest News

Picture

MetalTech-Global is proud to announce their new partnership with elZinc, the third largest producer of rolled zinc worldwide.
elZinc is the commercial trade name of Asturiana de Laminados, located in Asturias, Spain. This budding partnership will allow MetalTech to become a leading distributor of elZinc products nationwide bringing their customers the latest in zinc coil, sheet, and finished architectural products.

“A significant advantage of partnering with elZinc is the availability of color options and the agility of their mill to consistently develop their product range to keep pace with a market that’s always in flux,” says Nils Simonsen, President of MetalTech-Global. “elZinc is a privately held company that’s nimble enough to assist in creating a change in our market but large enough with the resources in advanced technology to grow our market.”

As a company, elZinc prides itself in their policy of quality, respect for the environment and their continuous research, development, and innovation. Together with the use of the best technologies available in the market, elZinc offers products which more than comply with quality requirements outlined in the EN988 standard as well as ASTM B69-13, the standard specification for rolled zinc. With over 98% of elZinc sales already stemming from international markets, there is untapped potential to be captured in the Americas.
“[Our goal for elZinc is to] position ourselves, in the next 3 to 5 years as the number one architectural zinc company in the USA and in Latin America,” says Macario Fernandez Fernandez, elZinc President.
Whether natural or pre-weathered, zinc is a material highly valued by architects and professional roofers. It allows great freedom in terms of aesthetics and architecture and is perfectly suitable for all types of construction both in classical and modern architecture.

An old church dome in Orange, Texas returned to its former glory and got new life as The Center of Stark Cultural Venues, thanks in part to MetalTech-Global, a premier distributor and specialty fabricator of eco-friendly architectural metals.

Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, a private operating foundation to encourage and assist education and to improve and enrich the quality of life in Southeast Texas, purchased the old church to be the central location of all Stark Cultural Venues, in May 2013.

The historic dome became an Orange landmark when erected in 1914 as the worship center for First Baptist Church, originally constructed as a brick building with a 35-foot dome comprised of wooden shingles. Over the past 100 years, the dome underwent several renovations to prevent corrosion and aid in waterproofing but these efforts did not permanently address the issues.

“In the 1960’s the dome was clad with metal,” said Gus Harris, Chief Properties Officer of Stark Foundation. “This served the church well but eventually began to leak, primarily due to inappropriate flashing and caulking near the bottom.”

The aluminum clad dome suffered major damage to the exterior over time from several severe storms and hurricanes including Hurricane Rita in2005 and Ike in2008, thus, causing it to leak and creating water damage to the interior. The plans to renovate were to render the structure watertight as well as changing the existing appearance of the dome to resemble the original 1914 design.
